An Atlantic City police officer was recently honored for saving a stabbing victim’s life.
Officer Joseph Bereheiko is a trained emergency medical technician who always carries a stocked medical bag.
That proved life-saving when he responded to a double stabbing Dec. 18, 2020.
Officers were called to the 600 block of Virginia Avenue just after 11 p.m. and found a man and woman stabbed.
Carlos Suarez-Vera, 25, was already wanted for making terroristic threats against the woman earlier that day, police said at the time.
The 35-year-old woman was bleeding heavily from both arms, according to the report at the time.
Bereheiko put a tourniquet on each arm, saving the woman’s life.
“I applaud Atlantic City Police Officer Joseph Bereheiko for his commitment to the service of the victims of violent crimes and for his response in saving the (the woman’s life),” acting Atlantic County Prosecutor Cary Shill said. “Officer Joseph Bereheiko’s quick actions in response to this incident show how deserving he is of this recognition.”
Bereheiko was the only officer from the state honored by National Association of Police Organizations at last week’s ceremony.
The TOP COPS awards have been presented since 1994, and are meant to pay tribute to law enforcement officers in federal, state, county, tribal and local agencies from across the country for actions above and beyond the call of duty.
Nominations are made by fellow officers.
An independent Awards Selection Committee comprised of national law enforcement representatives select the winners from hundreds of nominations, with one from each of the 50 states and U.S. territories.
