Four South Jersey women are the newest assistant prosecutors for Atlantic County, including two from the county.
Paige Cramer, Shelby Scheffler, Alyssa Gilboy and Jessica Marie O'Hearn all graduated from Widener University Delaware Law School and were sworn in Thursday by Superior Court Judge Bernard DeLury.
"I look forward seeing the work that each of them will complete for ACPO and for the Atlantic County community as assistant prosecutors," acting Atlantic County Prosecutor Cary Shill said.
Shill was joined by First Assistant Mario Formica in welcoming the new APs.
Cramer graduated Atlantic City High School in 2008, and is a lifelong county resident who says she was inspired by her grandparents, longtime teachers in Margate.
"They were both teachers and raised my siblings and I," she said. "They stressed the importance of education and provided us with every educational opportunity."
Cramer clerked for Superior Court Judge James P. Savio from 2019 to 2020. She also worked at the Atlantic City law firm Goldenberg, Mackler, Sayegh and Mintz for almost 13 years.
Scheffler, a 2013 Mainland Regional High School graduate, already has a name well-known in the Atlantic County courts system.
Her father is a defense attorney and her uncle is the county sheriff.
“I am inspired by my dad, Steven Scheffler, who is a dedicated trial lawyer who has practiced law -- including criminal law -- for 27 years,” she said.
She was on the Law Review at Widener, and clerked for Superior Court Judge Benjamin Podolnick in the Family Division of the Atlantic County Superior Courts for the last year.
Gilboy and O'Hearn both hail from Marlton, Burlington County and graduated Cherokee High School together in 2013.
Gilboy studied abroad in London, and clerked for Ocean County Superior Court Judge Guy P. Ryan.
Her grandfather was her inspiration to become a prosecutor.
"I grew up watching him as a criminal defense attorney and municipal prosecutor,” Gilboy said.
O'Hearn received the Dean’s Merit Scholarship, and served as research assistant to Dean Rodney A. Smolla from January 2019 to May 2020. A member of the Women's Law Caucus, she served as president for a year beginning in May 2019.
“My mom who has been an attorney for 28 years and practices civil litigation (labor/employment) is my inspiration,” she said.
