Atlantic City man arrested after barricading inside bedroom, fleeing

  • News

A suspect in a domestic disturbance was arrested about 40 minutes after barricading himself inside a bedroom and fleeing police.

Corey Cornish, 33, was found hiding under a mattress in an alley.

He was just released from prison in July after serving time for escaping detention after cutting off his ankle bracelet, BreakingAC confirmed.

Police were called to an apartment building in the first block of South Iowa Avenue, across from the Public Safety Building, at about 8 a.m. Friday, Sgt. Paul Aristizabal said.

Lt. Kevin Fair and Officer Michelle Cardani responded and talked to the victim in a fourth-floor apartment, according to the report.

As they spoke with the victim, they saw the suspect retreat into a bedroom, and then heard moving furniture to block the door, Aristizabal said.

The information was put out and unit responded, setting up a perimeter, according to the report.

As officers were getting into position, Cornish was seen climbing down the fire escape before losing sight of him.

The Emergency Response Team — which includes SWAT, the Crisis Negotiation Team and Mobile Command Post — were activated and responded to the scene, Aristizabal said.

Cornish was found about 40 minutes later, hiding under a mattress in an alley on the south side of the building.
