Car left running in Atlantic City leads to arrest of EHC man with stolen gun, drugs

An Egg Harbor City man is jailed after he was allegedly left a vehicle running in the road with a stolen gun inside.

Atlantic City Police Officer Ivan Cruz was on patrol just after 8 p.m. Saturday when he saw the vehicle idling on the road in the 1700 block of Atlantic Avenue, according to the report.

Cruz position his patrol car behind the vehicle and activated his emergency lights, Sgt. Paul Aristizabal said. He checked the vehicle, and found it was not registered.

Dashawn Stotts, 28, then returned to the area, identifying himself as the driver, according to the report.

Officer Jesse Oliver-Logan and his K-9 partner, Gee, responded as backup.

Gee ultimately gave a positive indication of drugs in the vehicle, Aristizabal said.

A search led to a stolen handgun along with a large amount of drugs, according to the charges.

Stotts was found with drugs, including 8 grams of suspected crack cocaine, one wax fold of suspected heroin, 29 oxycodone pills, prescription codeine pills, 39 grams of marijuana and $500 in cash believed to be from drug sales, Aristizabal said.

Stotts was charged with unlawful possession of weapon, possession of a handgun for an unlawful purpose, possession of a weapon while committing a drug offense, certain person not to possess weapons, receiving stolen property, possession of drug paraphernalia, obstruction, possession with intent to distribute and five counts each of possession of a controlled dangerous substance and possession within 500 feet of a public park.

He is in the Atlantic County Justice Facility pending a detention hearing.
