Mural honors civil rights leaders' Atlantic City connections

  • Sunday Special

A new mural in Atlantic City will honor black icons of the civil rights movement just in time for the NAACP Convention.

Zach Kazten said he had the idea for a while, but the timing is perfect as the city readies to host the convention starting Thursday.

"I have a personal love of Atlantic City and its history," said Katzen who brought the idea to Stockton University and got their backing. "I think not enough people here know all the great people and great things that happened here.

"We need to remind them and I think murals are a great way to do it," he added.

The mural depicts Muhammad Ali as he walked Madison Avenue in 1964, along with the famous photo of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Chicken Bone Beach.

Rounding out the three legends is Fannie Lou Hammer who in 1964 testified before the credentials committee at the Democratic National Convention in the Atlantic City to protest the party's refusal to seat black delegates from Mississippi.

"People need to know not only were these people civil rights icons, but they spent time here in Atlantic City inspiring people," Katzen said.
