  • News

An Atlantic City 13-year-old is in custody after allegedly wounding two men in a daylight shooting.

Police were called to the 1700 block of Atlantic Avenue after the report of a shooting and a ShotSpotter audio gunshot-detection alert just before 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sgt. Paul Aristizabal said.

A few minutes later, two men ages 30 and 34 arrived at the AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center with gunshot wounds, according to the report.

An investigation found that the suspect had gone into the rear of a three-story dwelling in the 1700 block of Atlantic, Aristizabal said.

Lt. Alexus Zeilinger, a crisis negotiator, made contact with the suspect via cell phone and after about an hour was able to convince him and two others to exit peacefully, according to the report.

Police searched the apartment and found a handgun believed to have been used in the shooting.

The teen was charged with two counts each of aggravated assault, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. He was also charged with unlawful possession of a weapon.

The boy, whose name was not released due to his age, was taken to Harborfields Juvenile Detention Center.

The two others in the home were released without charges.

Atlantic Avenue from Ohio to Kentucky avenues was closed to traffic during the incident.
