Man shot by police in Absecon now jailed on weapons charges

An Absecon man shot by police during a standoff outside the Dollar General is out of the hospital and in jail.

Jalial Whitted, 37, faces several charges after he allegedly fired a gun inside the Absecon store a month ago.

Police were called to the store just down the street from Holy Spirit High School at about 9:30 a.m. May 24.

There, an officer got Whitted to come outside. But he refused commands and told the officers, "Shoot me," according to the affidavit obtained by BreakingAC.

Whitted was shot by police, which is being investigated by the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office in accordance with Attorney General Guidelines.

Whitted was suffering from a mental issue when the incident occurred, his mother said at a press conference after the incident.

The incident caused Holy Spirit and nearby Leeds Avenue School to go on lockdown.

Before police arrived, video surveillance shows Whitted first entered a stranger's car parked in the store's lot, the affidavit states. When the car's owner returned, he pulled Whitted out of the driver's seat.

Whitted then entered the store and brandished a gun, causing employees to run from the store, according to the affidavit.

He is seen firing the gun at a support beam near the front of the store, Officer William Hess wrote in the report.

A female customer then entered the store, and Whitted told her to call police, the affidavit states.

Whitted has been hospitalized since the incident. The charges were administratively dismissed for that time.

But on Thursday, the charges were reinstated and Whitted was taken to the Atlantic County Justice Facility, where he is awaiting a detention hearing.

He is charged with three second-degree weapons offenses, including possessing and discharging a handgun, and certain person not to possess a weapon.

Whitted, who his family said suffers from a pre-existing psychiatric condition, has had several prior interactions with police. That includes two arrests within three months in 2018.

He was charged with assaulting police officers and an emergency medical technician that January, and then ripping an officer’s baton from his duty belt that April.

He pleaded guilty in 2019 to the lesser charge of eluding and threatening law enforcement, court records show.

In 2015, Pleasantville agreed to pay him $50,000 to settle an excessive force suit he filed, John Paff reported on transparencynj.com.

That settlement stemmed from a Dec. 6, 2013 incident at Whitted’s home, in which he claimed Whitted was already on the ground and handcuffed when a K-9 dog was ordered to attack him and five other officers beat him, Paff reported.
