Fugitive in 1994 Atlantic County killing just extradited from Mexico

  • News

A "very dangerous" fugitive wanted in a Buena killing for nearly three decades is now behind bars in Atlantic County.

Francisco Martinez, now 52, was arrested last October, after lead Detective Anthony Branca was able to locate him in Mazatlán, Sinaloa, Mexico, Atlantic County Sheriff Eric Scheffler announced Monday.

He was listed as one of the state's most wanted criminals, but no details about the crime have been released, including the victim. It does warn that he has "violent tendencies."

Martinez was indicted June 13, 1994, for murder in the killing of Patricia Boney, according to the indictment obtained by BreakingAC.

The indictment also included possession of a knife for an unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of a weapon.

The indictment ordered Martinez to appear before the Superior Court judge upon his arrest, after he failed to appear post-indictment.

The Sheriff's Office has had the warrant since then.

Martinez was born in Mexico. It was not clear how close he was found to his place of birth.

He was extradited Friday.

Martinez was one of the cases featured in an Aug. 24, 2002, episode of "America's Most Wanted."

The sheriff credited Kathy Johnson and the attorneys of the Extradition Unit of the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office with bringing Martinez back to Atlantic County.

He is currently in the Atlantic County Justice Facility.

"Thanks to all the incredible work done by this joint operation, we were able to bring this case to justice," Scheffler said.

(NOTE: The Atlantic County Justice Facility does not release mugshots under a previous order by the former prosecutor.)
