Absecon armed robbery fugitive arrested with loaded gun in Atlantic City, police say

  • News

An Atlantic City man wanted in an Absecon armed robbery was arrested with a loaded handgun, police said.

Douglas DeBerry, 24, was seen walking east in the 1100 block of Atlantic Avenue at about 11:15 Sunday morning, Sgt. Paul Aristizabal said.

Detective Fariyd Holmes recognized him from a flyer distributed by the Absecon Police Department regarding an armed robbery Oct. 28, according to the report.

Officer Adrian Nunez-Santos tried to stop DeBerry, who ran but was quickly apprehended, Aristizabal said.

During a brief struggle, DeBerry dropped a loaded Glock 23 handgun, according to the report.

The handgun had a high-capacity magazine and had been reported stolen from Florida.

DeBerry is charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a high-capacity magazine, possession of stolen property and obstruction by flight.

Atlantic City police released him to Absecon police, and he was jailed on those charges there, including armed robbery, aggravated assault and burglary.

DeBerry appeared in court briefly Monday afternoon via video from the Atlantic County Justice Facility.

He was informed that he would have a detention hearing set for Thursday.

He was accused of smashing a car and a person with a baseball bat at the time.
