The young Northfield police officer who died in a freak accident will be laid to rest Monday.
Johnathan Scull, 27, was just starting out his career in law enforcement in the town where he was a lifelong resident.
He died Tuesday while working on his car.
"Johnathan especially loved exploring things and taking mechanical things apart to see how they worked," according to his obituary.
The department where he began as a Special Law Enforcement Class II officer in 2020 mourned his passing, joined by condolences from surrounding county departments.
"Johnathan had a special way and love about him," his obituary reads. "He was kind and caring to everyone; he loved helping people."
That compassion led him to follow his grandfather, Francis D. Perfect of Adams-Perfect Funeral Home, into work as a funeral director.
"He chose to help people during their biggest time of need," his obituary reads.
But it was his father's work with the State Police that had an early impact.
As a child, he would wear his father's police shirt and hat, pulling over imaginary cars with lights and sirens on his wagon, according to his obituary.
"John truly loved his police officer comrades, and strived to be the most compassionate police officer one could be," the obituary reads.
A visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Adams-Perfect Funeral Home,1650 New Road in Northfield. Another visitation will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. at Wimberg Funeral Home, 211 E. Great Creek Road in Galloway Township.
A service will follow at 11 a.m. Burial will be at Port Republic Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, those who choose to honor Scull are asked to donate to the Pineland Preservation Alliance in Southampton via their website at PinelandsAlliance.org.
