A Pennsylvania man who led police on a chase in a stolen car that ended in Hammonton was released last week with conditions.
Anwar Jones, 23, went in excess of 105 mph as he fled Mullica Township police on at about 12:40 a.m. Sept. 3, according to the state.
Jones was heading to Atlantic City in a black Kia Soul reported stolen from Pennsylvania when Mullica police tried to stop him, according to the affidavit of probable cause obtained by BreakingAC.
Mullica police terminated the chase as the vehicle entered Hammonton traveling west on Route 30, the affidavit states.
A Hammonton patrolman then saw the vehicle pass, and made a U-turn to try to track it. The officer then found the abandoned vehicle crashed into bushes in front a home in the 800 block of Central Avenue, according to the affidavit and information given during Jones’ detention hearing.
A K-9 dog then tracked from the car to footprints on the bank of the Hammonton Lake.
A couple was then seen walking around Central Avenue and Grape Street at about 3:30 a.m. The K-9 then indicated the same scent was on the man, identified as Jones.
Jones’ criminal history dates to at least 2013, when he would have been about 13 or 14 years old, according to court records.
Assistant Prosecutor Jasmine Ostrow told the judge that Jones’ juvenile history from his home state of Pennsylvania was not included in the public safety assessment, which helps decide whether a defendant is detained under bail reform.
The public safety assessment recommended his release.
Judge Donna Taylor agreed with the recommendation, releasing Jones with the requirements of monthly in-person check-ins and monthly check-ins by phone.
