An Atlantic County man accused of burglarizing an Egg Harbor Township business while on release for similar crimes was ordered held in jail Monday.
Daniel G. Rolls, 51, is accused of shattering the front door of Jack & Son Nails Spa and stealing cash from the register.
Police were called to the business at 6727 Black Horse Pike at about 10:20 a.m. Aug. 20, Sgt. Brett Fair said.
Rolls was identified as the suspect after an investigation by Detective Paul Janetta.
Rolls was arrested by Pleasantville police two days later in that case and for a bench warrant stemming from his failure to appear on similar pending charges, according to information released during his bail hearing Monday.
He also has charges out of Northfield for the date of his arrest, court records show.
Rolls had just been released from jail on the highest level of monitoring in June, after he was arrested in several burglaries and thefts in the township, along Northfield, Pleasantville and Atlantic City, court records show.
"The defendant has clearly shown he will continue to engage in this criminality," Assistant Prosecutor Taylor Lord told the judge in arguing for detention. "He has established himself as a career criminal."
Defense attorney Tom Rossell said his client has an alibi for the time the spa was burglarized.
Rolls was seen reacting with shock to much of what was said during the hearing.
When Lord told the judge about alleged failures to appear in court earlier this month, Rolls replied: "How? I went to court."
Judge William Miller pointed out that Rolls has been sentenced to prison at least six prior times in the past 20 years, including a four-year sentenced in 2017. The sentencing terms add up to about 18 years total, although it was unclear how much of that time Rolls served.
The judge said that releasing Rolls back on the highest level of monitoring often "kind of backfires on the court and doesn’t protect the community."
"He's out of control and his behavior's unabated," Miller said in ordering Rolls held.
He will remain in the Atlantic County Justice Facility.
