A Wildwood Crest man allegedly was under the influence when he struck and injured a pedestrian in Rio Grande and fled.
The 48-year-old woman was critically injured when she was struck at the intersection of Route 47 and Fifth Street, police said.
Elijah Bethel, 21, was arrested by Lower Township police who found the car matching the description given by witnesses.
He is charged with leaving assault by auto, leaving the scene of a an accident with serious bodily injury, driving under the influence and driving with open containers/unsealed marijuana in the vehicle.
The crash was investigated by the Middle Township Crash Team, Middle Township Major Crimes Unit and the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office.
The Cape May County Sheriff’s Department, State Police and Rio Grande and Green Creek fire companies also assisted at the scene.
The investigation closed Route 47 for about three hours.
Bethel is in the Cape May County jail pending a detention hearing.
