A Somers Point man convicted in a deadly 2020 home invasion was sentenced to 54 years in prison Wednesday.
Oshshakkur Derrick, 27, and a still-unidentified man broke into a home in the 100 block of North Pennsylvania Avenue on Nov. 22, 2020.
They apparently believed the home was vacant since the owners were away. Instead, they found the owner's sister and Jose Ortiz.
Ortiz, 36, of Egg Harbor Township, was shot in the chest.
The woman, identified only as H.A., woke up to a firearm being pointed in her face. She then was tied up and threatened that she would be shot if she didn’t tell them where the money was.
The woman was struck in the head with the gun and placed in a bedroom closet.
After the men left, the woman was able to get free and call police, who responded at 12:43 a.m., and found Ortiz with a gunshot wound to his chest.
The 36-year-old man was taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center’s City Campus, where he was pronounced dead.
Derrick was arrested less than two weeks later, and originally housed in Gloucester County.
A jury convicted Derrick on seven counts, including armed robbery, two counts of kidnapping and felony murder, which is a death that occurs during the commission of another crime.
He was sentenced to 45 years for murder, with an additional nine years for the aggravated assault.
Derrick must serve at least 85 percent of those sentences before he is eligible for parole, for a total of just more than 45 years and nine months. He has credit for about two years and eight months.
He remains in the Atlantic County Justice Facility pending his transfer to state prison.
