An Atlantic City man found aiding a stabbing victim was actually the attacker, police said.
Nicholas Hall, 36, told police that he saw the 45-year-old victim being robbed, according to the report.
But an investigation later found Hall stabbed the man during a dispute, Lt. Kevin Fair said.
Police were called to an apartment building in the first block of South Iowa Avenue for a stabbing.
Officer Christopher Campbell took over aiding the victim, applying a tourniquet to the man's leg, according to the report.
Hall was later arrested and also found to have outstanding warrants, Fair said.
He is charged with aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
Hall is in the Atlantic County Justice Facility pending a detention hearing.
He seemed to doze off several times during a brief appearance before Superior Court Judge Joseph Levin via video from the jail.
"You have to stay awake for the hearing, sir," Levin told him, after calling Hall's name several times.
"I'm awake," Hall replied.
"OK, you don't look like you're awake," the judge told him.
Hall leaned against the wall with his eyes closed during the hearing.
"You appear to be very tired," Levin told him as Hall yawned while sitting up.
He has a detention hearing set for Friday.
