The cause of a fire that destroyed a section of Atlantic City's Boardwalk on Friday remains under investigation, the fire chief said.
It's believed to have started with debris that investigators described as "a homeless encampment under the Boardwalk," Fire Chief Scott Evans told BreakingAC.
"Investigators combed through the debris for several hours (Saturday) searching for clues and the cause of the fire," he said.
Electrical has been ruled out since there was no electric source in the area, Evans added.
Around that same time, firefighters were also called to an activated fire alarm at Jeffries Towers at 227 N. Vermont Ave., which required response from Engines 2 and 3 and Ladder 2, Evans confirmed.
That turned out to be nothing.
But over on the Boardwalk at South New Jersey Avenue, Deputy Chief Duane Brock was leading a team of firefighters in the blaze that destroyed a section of famous wooden walkway.
Engines 1, 6 and 7, along with Rescue 1 were on the scene, and were able to get the fire under control by about 6:30 p.m. One firefighter suffered minor injuries.
Firefighters stayed through the night putting out hotspots.
Nearby Ocean Casino Resort lauded the firefighters as "hometown heroes," saying the company was grateful for their work.
