Mays Landing man gets 25 years in sexual assaults of minor he recorded

  • News

A Mays Landing man who admitted to sexually assaulting a minor on several occasions and recording the abuse was sentenced to 25 years in prison Tuesday.

Christian Navarrete, 39, has been jailed since his arrest Dec. 24, 2019.

He had more than 80 videos showing him assaulting the victim.

Navarrete pleaded guilty in August to aggravated sexual assault of a minor, sexual assault of a minor and for endangering the welfare of a child by filming her in a prohibited sexual act.

He admitted that between July 18, 2017 and Dec. 15, 2019, he raped the victim several times in his Hamilton Township home. He also admitted filming the victim while engaged in those acts, and storing the videos on his cell phone.

An evaluation by the Adult Diagnostic and Treatment Center found Navarrete's behavior was compulsive and repetitive. As a result, he will service his sentence at the center in Avenel, where he will receive treatment.

He must serve at least 85 percent of his sentence under the No Early Release Act.

Upon his release, Navarrete must register as a Megan's Law offender, with lifetime supervision.

The victim was extremely brave in coming forward, Chief Assistant Prosecutor Erika Halayko said.

She also noted that videoing the assaults constituted an "extreme violation" of the victim's trust.
