A Philadelphia woman accused of stabbing her husband while they vacationed in Atlantic City was released pending trial Tuesday.
April Williams, 44, allegedly stabbed her husband in the stomach Feb. 12.
When police confronted the woman as she walked out of the residence, she told them she couldn't remember what happened, Assistant Prosecutor Matthew Mills told the judge.
She was slurring her words and having trouble maintaining her balance, he said.
Surveillance video shows Williams trying to stab her husband's tires when he comes up and strikes her in the back of the head and kicked her several times before walking away, according to the affidavit of probable cause read during her detention hearing.
She is then seen pursuing her husband, with both going out of the camera range.
"My client's husband was assaulting her," defense attorney Maya Rex told the judge, saying Williams is making a claim of self-defense.
"I'm not going to diminish what happened here," Judge Patricia Wild said in rendering her decision, calling the altercation "a mutual fight on video."
She also noted that alcohol may have been involved.
Williams cannot live with her husband but can return to Philadelphia, where she works as a medical assistant in a doctor's office, according to Rex.
There is no restraining order in the case, but the judge ordered Williams to have no contact with her husband.
Rex said Williams can live with her mother, who also resides in Philadelphia.
Because Williams lives out of state, the judge released her on a higher level of monitoring than recommended by the public safety assessment, which helps determine whether a defendant should be held pre-trial.
She cannot return to the county other than for court dates or to meet with her attorney or pretrial services.
