Atlantic City man allegedly stabbed EHT teen in 'bias' attack

  • News

An Atlantic City man allegedly asked why white people were allowed in the neighborhood before stabbing an Egg Harbor Township teen, police said.

Tyler Smith, 38, is charged with attempted murder, bias intimidation and aggravated assault in the attack Monday night in the 1600 block of Adriatic Avenue, Lt. Kevin Fair said.

Officer Zayon Pitts arrived at the scene to find the 18-year-old bleeding from the neck, according to the report.

Pitts rendered aid while awaiting medical personnel. The victim was then taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center's City Campus for the serious injury, which Fair said was not considered life-threatening.

An investigation found that the victim was standing with a friend when Smith approached.

He questioned why white people were allowed in the neighborhood before stabbing the unnamed victim, Fair said.

Several members of the community tried to intervene and detain Smith, but he fled before police arrived.

Surveillance Center personnel were able to obtain a photo of Smith fleeing. He also dropped his wallet during the altercation with bystanders leading to his identification.

He is additionally charged with weapons offenses, including certain person not to possess a weapon, indicating he has a record.

Smith, who is listed as black in the Atlantic County Justice Facility, will be held pending a detention hearing.
