Mays Landing motorcyclist gets four years in fatal crash

  • News

A Mays Landing man whose passenger was killed in a motorcycle crash was sentenced to four years in prison Friday.

Matthew Gittens, 38, was speeding with a suspended license when he lost control of the bike and hit a guardrail May 18, 2019, near Exit 12 on the Atlantic City Expressway, according to the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office.

Both he and his passenger, a 27-year-old from Mays Landing listed only as Y.A., were thrown from the motorcycle. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

The case was investigated by the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office’s Crash Investigation Unit and the New Jersey State Police.

Gittens pleaded guilty May 11 to an open offer, meaning the sentence was at the judge's discretion.

He must serve at least two years before he is eligible for parole.

Gittens, who was not in jail, was taken into custody after his sentencing.
