EHT man arrested hours after release will now stay in jail

  • News

An Egg Harbor Township man arrested hours after his release from jail was ordered held Friday.

Rene DeJesus, 59, was first charged July 4, after he allegedly punched a police sergeant and then came at him with a rock, metal bird feeder and his pit bull.

He was released Monday, following a detention hearing.

But at 12:45 Tuesday morning, police were back at his home in Tilton Terrace. This time, he allegedly assaulted his son and a friend, and then locking himself in a bathroom when police arrived.

The defense attributed the actions to a mental health issue.

Judge Donna Taylor said, while mental health could have played a role, DeJesus did nothing to address it between his release and incurring a new charge.

"There is a concern of this court that by releasing him, he could continue to be a danger," she said.

DeJesus will remain in the Atlantic County Justice Facilty.
