Jurors view police body camera footage in fatal Pleasantville football game shooting

  • News

Videos from police body cameras were at the center of the state's case Thursday as the trial of the man accused in a deadly shooting at a Pleasantville High School football game reached its second day.

"Alvin Wyatt. Alvin Wyatt shot me," Ibn Abdullah says as a first responder tends to wounds.

His left arm was broken. His legs paralyzed.

Abdullah was the alleged target of the shooting, sparked by a beef between him and Wyatt.

When rescue workers cut off Abdullah's clothes, they discovered a gun in his waistband.

He never used it that night, according to the state. The defense has insisted otherwise.

Wyatt is accused of murder and two counts of attempted murder in the Nov. 15, 2019, shooting that happened during the third quarter as Pleasantville hosted Camden in a semi-final championship game.

Cody Griggs, then 15, was struck in the arm. The Egg Harbor Township man, now 19, testified earlier in the trial.

Micah Tennant, 10, was sitting in the stands not far from Abdullah with his mother and older sister.

A bullet went through his neck. He would die five days later, never regaining consciousness.

Angela Tennant's pleas for medical personnel to save her son can be heard in one of the videos that was played.

"Please don't let my son die. Please," the anguished mother cries, doubling over. "Oh my God!"

Several Pleasantville police officers testified Thursday before the footage captured by their body-worn cameras was shown.

They talked of running toward the gunshots as the joy and excitement in the stands devolved into panic and chaos.

They were not the only ones who ran to the danger.

Donald Gregory, a sanitation worker for the ACUA, was drawn to the game by his love of football. Both he and his son played for the Pleasantville Greyhounds when they each went there.

When the shots started, he looked toward the figure holding the gun.

When the shooter ran, Gregory followed.

Video shot by freelancer news videographer Alex Cohen captured Gregory as he pointed to the shooter and then ran, climbing a fence to make sure he didn't lose him.

Donald Gregory is shown climbing a fence to make sure he doesn't lose the shooter who ran from the stands.

"I'm just following him, make sure he doesn't get away," Gregory said as the video was played with a blue circle around him to make it clear to the jury.

A police officer had then gotten to Wyatt by the tennis courts and told Gregory to stand down.

Trial will continue Friday before Judge Donna Taylor.
