A fugitive in an Atlantic City shooting allegedly ditched a loaded gun before police arrested him Saturday.
Yahsin Cheeks, 30, was wanted in the July 30, 2020 shooting that happened just after midnight.
No details of the shooting have been released. The arrest appears to be the first time it was made public.
But it is not the first time Cheeks was accused of shooting someone.
He served more than three years in prison in a 2014 shooting that wounded a 20-year-old.
It is not clear where that case stands. He was apparently released at some point, but was back in the Atlantic County Justice Facility in February of 2020, jail records show. He was released that Aug. 14.
In the latest incident, Detective Eric Evans was off-duty when he received information that Cheeks was in the area of Virginia and Magellan avenues, Lt. Kevin Fair said.
He gave Officer Jesse Oliver-Logan the information, and Cheeks was located, but immediately ran, according to the report.
Oliver-Logan chased him and, with help from Officers William Luengas-Gonzalez and Michael Kragh, Cheeks was apprehended.
Cheeks discarded a satchel during the chase. Inside, was a loaded handgun, Fair said.
The Federal Bureau of Investigations Atlantic City Resident Agency aided the Violent Crimes Unit in the investigation.
Cheeks faces several charges from both the original case and the arrest.
He is is charged with two counts each of aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, certain person not to possess a weapon and resisting arrest.
He is also charged with obstruction of justice and possession of hollow-point ammunition.
Cheeks is jailed pending a detention hearing.
