An Atlantic City man convicted of fatally shooting his former girlfriend on his front porch was sentenced to 40 years in prison Friday.
Maximo Santiago would have to serve at least 85 percent of his sentence under the No Early Release Act, making it a life sentence for the 72-year-old man.
Marketa Thorpe, known to friends as Gina, was homeless and had slept on Santiago’s porch the night before, according to information previously released in court.
Santiago was arrested the next day as he tried to flee in his Nissan Pathfinder.
He told police Thorpe tried to attack him with a plastic broom when he went inside, got a loaded rifle and came out and fired once.
He had a history of committing violent crimes against women, Robinson noted during the sentencing, where Santiago was portrayed as a dangerous recidivist.
He now will remain in the Atlantic County jail awaiting transfer to state prison.
