A jury convicted a Somers Point man in a 2020 home invasion that left an Egg Harbor Township man dead and a woman injured.
Oshshakkur Derrick, 27, was found guilty of seven counts, including armed robbery, two counts of kidnapping and felony murder, which is a death that occurs during the commission of another crime.
Derrick and a still-unidentified man broke into the Atlantic City home in the 100 block of North Pennsylvania Avenue on Nov. 22, 2020.
The owners were away and the two men apparently expected the home to be vacant, according to the case.
Instead they found Jose Ortiz and the owner's sister, whose initials are listed as H.A.
Ortiz, 36, was shot in the chest.
The woman woke up to a firearm being pointed in her face. She then was tied up and threatened that she would be shot if she didn't tell them where the money was, according to the charges.
The woman was struck in the head with the gun and placed in a bedroom closet.
After the men left, the woman was able to get free and call police, who responded at 12:43 a.m., and found Ortiz with a gunshot wound to his chest.
The 36-year-old man was taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center's City Campus, where he was pronounced dead.
He was arrested less than two weeks later, and originally housed in Gloucester County.
Derrick is now in the Atlantic County Justice Facility, where he is awaiting sentencing scheduled for Aug. 7.
