Atlantic City man gets eight years in gun and drug case

  • Crime-Courts

An Atlantic City man tried to swim away from a police chase was sentenced to eight years in prison on gun and drug charges.

Dwayne Townsend, 29, must serve at least five years before he is eligible for parole.

Townsend was arrested July 26, 2021, after he crashed into a police vehicle while trying to flee following a drug deal.

When he went forward, another officer had to jump out of the way as Townsend crashed through a fence on Pacific Avenue, according to the report at the time.

Officers found the vehicle unoccupied and Townsend trying to swim away in the bay.

He came back on the dock, dropped a satchel and jumped back in, where he began to struggle. Sgt. Michael Tracy jumped in and rescued Townsend.

The satchel he dropped had heroin, cocaine and marijuana. Another satchel found on him had a loaded defaced 9mm Taurus G2C handgun with a 12-round high-capacity magazine.

Townsend remains in the Atlantic County Justice Facility pending his transfer to state prison.
