Teen allegedly stabbed minor in melee outside Atlantic City school

  • News

A teenager accused of stabbing a minor after several fights erupted outside an Atlantic City school was ordered held in jail Wednesday.

Jennifer Rodriguez, 18, is charged with aggravated assault and weapons offenses along with obstruction.

The Feb. 24 incident is tied to a melee that brought a large police presence to Texas Avenue around 3 p.m., according to the affidavit of probable cause obtained by BreakingAC.

Police were first called to the area for "unknown trouble outside the school," the affidavit states.

Traffic was backed up on the 100 block of North Texas Avenue, as the officer responding to "unknown trouble outside the school" wrote in the affidavit that he had to exit his vehicle and walk to the intersection.

The assistant principal then told him there was a large fight involving about 12 to 15 people including students and others that do not attend the school, Officer Sean Pettit wrote in the affidavit.

While Pettit was getting information from a juvenile girl who was allegedly involved in the first incident, more fights broke out across the street, he wrote.

As he approached the group of about 15, some ran north on Texas Avenue with others headed west on Arctic, the affidavit states.

Multiple police units in the area were notifying dispatch that there were several more groups fighting in the surrounding area.

BreakingAC has previously requested recordings from the incident through an Open Public Records Act request, which has not yet been filled.

Pettit stayed on scene gathering information from the principal when there was a report of a fight in the rear of the Public Safety Building two blocks from the school.

Units on the scene reported that a boy was stabbed, and put out a description of the suspect, who was wearing a black ski mask and black Adidas track pants, Pettit wrote.

He then saw Rodriguez, who matched the description, walking on the 100 block of North Texas Avenue.

She turned and walked the other way when she saw him walking toward her, according to the affidavit.

The officer had just seen Rodriguez without the mask by the school with her brothers, he wrote. He was familiar with her due to prior police contact and called her by name, ordering "Jennifer" to stop.

Rodriguez did not comply, and she ran north on Texas and then east on Fairmont Avenue. When the officer threatened to deploy his taser, she finally complied and was arrested, the affidavit states.

The officer found a knife hidden inside her left jacket sleeve as he handcuffed her, according to the report.

Rodriguez, who just turned 18 in January, already has a history of weapons making her a threat to the safety of the community, the judge said in rendering her decision.

"Why in the world does she keep going back to a school at 18 years old?" Judge Patricia Wild asked.

Rodriguez, who was muted on video from the jail, appeared to be yelling something as the judge spoke. She later raised her hand to speak but was ignored.

She will now remain in the Atlantic County Justice Facility as her case goes through court.

The boy was stabbed in the chest, according to the charges. It was a minor injury, according to the affidavit. He was treated at the hospital and released.
