Northfield man gets five years in Atlantic City gun and assault cases

  • News

A Northfield man who assaulted an Atlantic City police officer arresting him in an armed assault case was sentenced to five years in prison Wednesday.

David Spinks, 64, was wanted in a July 13, 2020, assault when Sgt. Garry Stowe stopped him Aug. 20 of that year, after recognizing the suspect vehicle.

He got out of the vehicle and assaulted Stowe. Spinks was taken into custody after other officers arrived to help.

Stowe found a loaded handgun in Spinks’ pocket, police said at the time.

Surveillance video had linked Spinks to the earlier crime.

He struck the 43-year-old victim in the head several times with a sawed-off shotgun on the first block of North Michigan Avenue.

The victim was taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center’s City Campus for treatment.

Spinks pleaded guilty Nov. 9, to second-degree certain person not to possess firearms and possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose.

He must serve all five years of the certain person sentence. He was given a concurrent sentence of five years on the possession for an unlawful purpose charge, which requires 3½ years before parole eligibility.
