The Atlantic City Police Department is coming together to help a fallen brother.
Sgt. Jeff Rivera was recently diagnosed with Stage 4 stomach cancer, which has metastasized to other parts of his body.
Rivera, 43, has served more than 15 years on the department, mostly as an undercover narcotics officer.
"He was willing to put his life on the line to make our neighborhoods safer," according to a release announcing fundraising efforts. "As a sergeant, he has served as a leader and mentor to younger officers, sharing his experience and love for the job."
He and his wife, Lisbet, have four children: Emily, 22; Erika, 14; Jeff Jr., 10, and Eric, 7. They live in Egg Harbor Township.
Rivera also was a father figure for his younger brother, Eric, who was killed serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom.
A benefit is planned for April 30 at Maynard's Cafe in Margate. It will run from 5 to 8 p.m. tickets are $40, and include beer, wine and food.

The PBA and Atlantic City Police Foundation are also teaming up for a Golf Outing that they plan to make an annual event.
It's planned for May 17 at McCullough's Emerald Golf Links in Egg Harbor Township.
The cost is $160 per player. Sponsorships are also available.
