A man wanted for attempted murder out of Brooklyn was rescued from the water in Atlantic City after he apparently tried to kill himself.
Darren Brathwaite, 36, was wanted in a domestic violence incident, police said.
A Boardwalk ambassador flagged down Officer Salvatore Rando Jr. at 4:47 p.m. Tuesday, telling him a man appeared to be in distress.
Brathwaite was seen going into the ocean at Hartford Avenue, Sgt. Paul Aristizabal said.
Rando saw Brathwaite in waist-high water. When he told him to exit the water, Brathwaite refused, according to the report.
The Atlantic City Fire Department Water Rescue Team was activated.
With help from additional responding officers and EMS personnel, Braithwaite left the water and was met on the shoreline by Officer Rebecca Seabrook and EMS personnel, Aristizabal said.
Brathwaite was taken by ambulance to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center's City Campus for evaluation.
After it was discovered he was a fugitive, he was taken into custody.
He is in the Atlantic County Justice Facility awaiting extradition.
