Quick-acting Atlantic City homeowner stops spread of fire

  • News

An Atlantic City resident's quick actions and working smoke detector helped contain a fire Friday night.

Firefighters were called to the 100 block of South Delancy Place around 6:30 p.m., Fire Chief Scott Evans said. It was under control in a half-hour.

The fire started in the 2½-story wood-frame home's second-floor bedroom, which had been converted to an office, Evans said.

The smoke detector alerted the woman, who closed the door to the room and put a towel under the door to prevent it from spreading, he said.

"If the door was not closed by her, the fire would have caused a lot more damage," Evans said.

The cause is under investigation. It is believed to be accidental.

Firefighters from Engine 6 arrived quickly, and brought the fire under control without any spread, Evans said.
