  • News

A Gloucester County man was sentenced to five years in prison for possessing a handgun in Ventnor.

David Shields, 44, of West Deptford, must serve at least 3½ years of his sentence before he is eligible for parole.

He also received a concurrent 18 months for obstruction.

Shields was arrested on May 13, 2021, after Ventnor police were flagged down about a public disturbance.

Shields refused to comply with officers' commands, according to allegations. He was arrested after a brief struggle that injured an officer.

The handgun was located after he was arrested.

Shields also was ordered to pay restitution for the injuries suffered by the officer.
