Atlantic City man made airsoft gun look real, police say

  • News

An Atlantic City man was arrested Monday, after the report of a robbery led to a stolen cell phone and an airsoft gun made to look like a real handgun, police said.

Officers were called to the 800 block of Pacific Avenue for an armed robbery involving an altercation with a woman, Lt. Kevin Fair said.

Abdul Chappell, 18, got into an argument with the woman before insinuating he had a gun and stealing her cell phone, according to the charges.

Chappell and the unnamed victim knew on another, Fair said.

Chappell gave police false information as he was arrested leaving his home in the 100 block of North Pennsylvania Avenue, and tried to pull away, according to the report. He allegedly had the cell phone on him.

Officer John Bell got a search warrant and found an airsoft gun modified to look identical to a real handgun including the use of an extended magazine, Fair said.  A rifle was also found.

Chappell is charged with robbery, possession of an imitation firearm, possession of a large capacity magazine, hindering apprehension, resisting arrest and unlawful possession of a weapon.

He is in the Atlantic County Justice Facility.
