The New York Jets edged past the New York Giants in their latest preseason clash, with Robert Saleh’s team winning 10-6 at the MetLife Stadium. The victory gives them a clean sweep as regards preseason matches and will no doubt have excited the franchise’s long-suffering fans.
Running back Israel Abanikanda put on a great display, running in a 45-yard touchdown with their defense also held steady, sacking Giants quarterback Tommy DeVito no less than eight times. DeVito is their third choice QB, with Daniel Jones sat on the sidelines and Drew Lock being their second-string.
Saleh’s starters also sat out the game, so arguably, there’s not much to be gleaned from the result, albeit it’s never a bad thing to go into a new season in the middle of a nice winning run. On scoring the key touchdown, Abanikanda stated,
“I knew it was going to pop off because I had a couple of runs earlier in the game for 10 yards here and there, so I knew one was going to pop for green,”
“I didn’t know I was going to get that free.” He added.
The Jets have missed out on postseason action for each of the past 13 seasons, but fans of the team may well feel that having a fit and ready Aaron Rodgers to call upon may lead to that woeful run coming to an end. On the subject of veteran Rodgers, the four-time NFL MVP was full of praise for wide receiver Allen Lazard, who has made the cut and will be part of Saleh’s roster for the 2024 season, which was certainly not a certainty after a rather average first season with the Jets, during which he completed just 23 passes for a sole touchdown and 311 yards.
The two played together at the Green Bay Packers for four seasons before Lazard teamed up with Rodgers at the Jets.
"I think he's had a really nice camp. I'm really proud of him. I think his leadership, as much as anything, has been great. I think he's conducted himself with a lot of humility, which is always some of the pie that you eat after a season you'd like to have gone differently. I'm really proud of the way he's responded. He's had a fantastic camp." Rodgers commented.
Saleh was also quick to speak in glowing terms about the 28-year-old.
"He looks really good. I've said it before, but I think he's doing all the little things where I feel last year he may have felt above it, where this year I think he's just been on it. He's been on all the details in all phases and being a leader in the meeting rooms. Overall, I think he is a lot more positive, not that he was negative. He's just in a really good place."
The New York Jets start the 2024 season on the road at Levi’s Stadium, facing off against last season’s beaten Super Bowl outfit, the San Francisco 49ers, before traveling to take on the Tennessee Titans in week two before finally kicking off at home in Game Week Three against the New England Patriots.
