An Atlantic City police officer is jailed after he allegedly brandished a gun during an argument with his wife earlier this year.
Warren Young, 29, of Brigantine, faces multiple charges in at least three separate incidents that occurred at various times between January 18 and Dec. 6, according to court papers obtained by BreakingAC.
But his attorney alleges that a criminal summons filed against the alleged victim indicates more to the story.
The Police Department's Criminal Investigations Section was alerted to the incidents Wednesday, according to a release put out late Friday afternoon.
Detectives, along with the Internal Affairs Section, initiated an investigation into the allegations that ultimately resulted in the criminal charges, Capt. Kevin Fair said.
Young was charged on summonses in incidents that allegedly happened Jan. 18 and Dec. 6 in Atlantic City. But he was charged on a warrant and jailed in the incident allegedly involving his service weapon, which happened sometime between March 1 and April 30, the victim told police.
"She did not remember the exact date," Officer Wahab Malik wrote in the affidavit of probable cause.
The victim claimed that Young "pulled out his service firearm and pointed it at her, then started to yell, 'I won't let you hurt me again." the affidavit states. "Young was referencing a prior domestic incident."
While the affidavit does not detail the prior incident, the officer's defense attorney says it was Young's wife who was the aggressor in that case.
Hunter Young also faces criminal charges, attorney Durann Neil noted.
BreakingAC has confirmed that Alexxus Hunter Young is charged on a summons, but the complaint has not yet been filed into the public system. It was unclear why that is.
Neil said the charge is connected to Hunter Young "slicing Mr. Young."
A quote attributes to Hunter Young posted to BreakingAC's social media claims the charge filed again her was retaliation after she "finally reached my limit and had the courage to stand up for myself."
She accused the reporting of the allegations against her were victim blaming.
Young's attorney had a different take.
"Warren Young's charges stem from an ongoing custody matter," Neil said. "Only in America can a young black officer with no criminal history be charged with a gun when the victim doesn't remember when it happened.
"Let this serve as a lesson to everyone: If your accuser is politically connected, you may find yourself facing jail time on baseless accusations," he continued.
Neil was referencing Hunter Young's connections that include working as assistant public relations officer for Atlantic City.
She has served as assistant to Atlantic City's business administrator since July, according to her LinkedIn, which seemed to be taken down hours after BreakingAC put out a request to the city for comment. It also listed her as a "general consultant" for the mayoral campaign from June 2020 to November 2021.
While it did not say whose mayoral campaign, she talked about working for Marty Small in a Stories of Atlantic City feature on her in 2022.
While at Stockton University, “We did mock campaigns," she is quoted as saying. "In 2017, I did mine based on the current mayor of Atlantic City's electoral campaign. So, I was pretty much interning — if you will — for his campaign. I did a lot of script writing, and event planning which helped me a lot.”
Small was not available to comment.
While Hunter Young's current charge or charges have not been made public, her estranged husband is jailed on second-degree possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose and fourth-degree aggravated assault by pointing a firearm.
He learned during an appearance in court via video from the jail Friday that he will be in custody until at least Tuesday, when a detention hearing is scheduled.
Young, who has been with the department since May 1, 2019, is also charged on a summons from a Jan. 18 incident where he allegedly used scissors as a weapon.
He faces third-degree possession of a weapon and fourth-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose in that case, where charges were signed Friday. There is no narrative on that affidavit.
The most recent case was from Dec. 6, when Young allegedly threatened to slap the victim, according to the affidavit. He is charged with disorderly persons harassment in that case.
This is not the first time Young and Hunter Young apparently had issues was charged in a domestic incident.
Court records show that both faced disorderly person and petty disorderly persons charges in 2020.
That Jan. 8, Hunter Young — then listed only as Alexxus Hunter — was accused of "throwing a full hard mint chocolate Wawa milkshake at the victim's head during a domestic altercation," according to one charge.
On Feb. 13, 2020, she allegedly sent "multiple text messages threatening to get the victim fired from his place of employment.
Three days later, Young was charged with yelling at and threatening a victim.
It appears those charges may have been dropped.
