A dog is being held in quarantine after a fatal attack on dogs as they were being walked Tuesday night.
A man whose name has not been released was walking his four Pomeranians on North Richards Avenue around 7 p.m., when a dog broke free from where he was tied up, and attacked, Chief Joe Fussner told BreakingAC.
Two of the dogs did not survive. The other two were injured, along with minor injuries to the owner who was walking them, the chief said.
Humane Law Enforcement Sgt. James Franco is investigating, and has identified the aggressor as a 3-year-old Belgian Malinois/Labrador mix.
The dog is in the shelter under a 10-day quarantine, at the end of which the owner will have to decide whether she will surrender the dog to be euthanized.
“We believe the intention of the owner is not to try to get the dog back,” Fussner said.
The dog was up to date on his rabies vaccinations.
Investigating Officer Blake Ballin already issued citations for dog running at large, and under a citation that says “no person who owns, keeps, harbors or maintains any animal shall permit or suffer it to do any damage to any person, fowl or domestic animal or permit or suffer it to do any damage, to soil or defile any lawn, shrubbery, garden, flowers, grounds or property other than that of the person owning, keeping, harboring or maintaining such animal.”
The dog was tied up in front of the house, Fussner said. There is no fence.
The department so far was not aware of any prior incident.
The names of the owners are not being released at this time.
