Bronx man jailed in Atlantic City purse-snatching

  • News

Atlantic City police are crediting a victim and two private citizens in the quick arrest of a purse-snatcher Thursday.

A witness stopped Officer Francis Malloy after 10 p.m. in the first block of north Arkansas Avenue.

Malloy saw the suspect fleeing the area and gave detailed information to responding officers, Lt. Kevin Fair said.

Officer Kyle Bender responded, and was stopped by the victim and a second witness who pointed out Hernandez as he continued to run.

Bender was able to quickly catch up to Jose Hernandez and take him into custody without incident, Fair said. Hernandez had the victim's belongings, along with an active warrant for his arrest.

Hernandez allegedly approached the victim trying to sell her a cigarette before stealing grabbing her purse and running.

Hernandez, 27, is charged with theft and was sent to the Atlantic County Justice Facility.
