Two homeless people rescued from fire in vacant A.C. row home

  • News

Firefighters rescued two people who had to climb out a third-floor window to escape a fire Thursday evening.

The row home at 1510 Belfield Ave. was boarded up and vacant, Fire Chief Scott Evans said. The two people who had been inside were homeless.

Firefighters were called at about 5:30 p.m., and saw smoke showing as they left the Maryland Avenue firehouse, Evans said.

They arrived to find flames and smoke coming out of the rear second-floor window extending to the third floor. They also saw two people standing on the roof of the second-floor bay window, Evans said.

They were rescued by Ladder 1. EMTs evaluated them at the scene, but they refused further medical care.

Atlantic City police assisted with evacuated the connected buildings, which were not damaged "due to an aggressive action by the men and women of the Atlantic City Fire Department who contained the fire to the second and third floor in the rear," Evans told BreakingAC.

There were no injuries.

The cause is still under investigation.

The home was heavily damaged, Evans said, adding that Public Works also responded.

Code enforcement officers will inspect the house Friday morning to see if it's stable, he said.

A fire in June burned a row of homes across the street from Thursday's fire. A woman was charged with setting that blaze.

The fire was across the street from a blaze that destroyed a block of rowhomes last June.

Monica Parrish, 48, of Pleasantville, was charged with setting that blaze. She was allegedly seen using an accelerant on several porches the all five homes were engulfed by flames.

Police and firefighters saved 10 people from that fire. Three were sent to the hospital for treatment.

Fire Chief Scott Evans called the response “the biggest display of heroism” he had seen in his 36 years.
