Galloway cockfighting ring suspect released due to sick child

  • Crime-Courts

A Galloway Township man who allegedly turned his home into an elaborate cockfighting operation was released from jail last week to care for his sick child, court records show.

Jose Madera, 33, is charged with 111 counts after police found a cockfighting ring, spectator-style seating and numerous cockfighting "kits" inside the residence in the 300 block of South Breman Avenue during a raid in March.

Police arrived to a large group of individuals  — many trying to flee. Summonses were issued to 50 people.

There were about 50 roosters in various degrees of health being held in crates, storage boxes and bags. Four dogs were also taken from the home.

More than $37,000 in cash was seized.

Madera was ordered held during a detention hearing in March, after Judge Pam D'Arcy found the number of charges coupled with his criminal history proved detention was necessary.

But last week, both sides agreed to release due to his child being "seriously ill," according to the court order.

No other details were given.

The charges remain pending.
