The old gal looks good for being 143 years old, thanks to a facelift two years ago, and she’s hoping people will look past her age and vote for her in the upcoming election.
According to Lucy the Elephant officials, people should not assume party affiliation for Margate’s iconic roadside attraction.
Although Lucy the Elephant will announce Saturday that she is running for president in November, her benefactors advise voters to not assume that because she is an elephant, she is a Republican.
“Lucy is in a party all her own,” the Save Lucy Committee wrote on its website announcing her 143rd birthday party will be held 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, July 20, which will include the big announcement that Lucy is running for president.
The annual event features a fun-filled day of activities, entertainment and food offerings, including a 9-hole miniature golf course, money booth filled with “Lucy Bucks” campaign cash and special prizes at every turn.
To help participants beat the heat, including the candidates, a 22-foot waterslide will be set up at Josephine Harron Park, the USA’s number one roadside attraction’s homebase overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.
The organization will be selling their highly collectible “Lucy for President” T-shirts to help fund Lucy’s campaign. Additionally, participants will get to make their own Lucy for President pin that’s also sure to become a collector’s item.
To promote a carnival like atmosphere, tickets can be purchased for outside activities in the main tent for $1 each, 11 for $10 or 25 for $20. Admission for tours of the inside of Lucy the Elephant are available separately in the Gift Shop. Tours are $8.50 for those 13 and older, $4 for children up to age 12, and free for children under age 2.
And what birthday party would be complete without some sweets for the sweet. Lucy will Lucy blow out the candles on her 143rd birthday cake at 3 p.m.
