About 110 riders rolled out Saturday morning from the Stockton University Galloway campus for the 16th annual G. Larry James Legacy Bike Ride.
The annual ride raises funds for a scholarship honoring James, the university's former dean of athletics and Olympian.
Dean won gold in the 4 × 400 m relay at the 1968 Olympics and a silver in the individual 400 m. He lived in Galloway Township when he died in 2008, at 61.
But his legacy was his service to his community and dedication to Stockton, according to those who started the scholarship.
The ride featured three distances – 12, 30 and 62 miles – on routes through the Pine Barrens near Stockton’s campus.
The scholarship is open to a full-time sophomore, junior or senior in good academic standing with a minimum GPA of 3.0.
This year’s event raised about $25,000 for the fund. More than $320,000 has been raised in the ride's history.
