An Egg Harbor Township man was fatally struck as he crossed the road in his motorized wheelchair Thursday night.
Santos Acosta-Arias, 59, of Pleasantville, was unlicensed when he made a left turn off the Black Horse Pike and struck the pedestrian who was crossing Delancy Avenue just after 7 p.m., Lt. Mark Mensch said.
Ernest Miller was pronounced dead at the scene.
It was the second fatal crash in the area in two days.
Acosta-Arias was criminally charged with causing death while driving unlicensed, along with several motor vehicle violations.
It is the second time this year he was cited for driving without a license. He also had a citation in January for driving in the area of Fire Road and the Black Horse Pike for driving with an expired license, court records show.
Neither alcohol nor drugs is believed to be a factor.
The Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office, Egg Harbor Township EMS and the NJDOT Traffic Incident Response Team were on scene.
Traffic was detoured for about four hours.
