Egg Harbor Township man dies in crash

An Egg Harbor Township man died after a crash in the township early Monday morning.

Jose Catalan, 87, was driving south on Fernwood Avenue, when stopped the sign at Delaware, at about 2:43 a.m., Capt. Cherie Burgan said.

Brandon Troy, 19, also of the township, was heading west on Delaware Avenue in a 2006 Toyota RAV4, approaching the intersection when Catalan entered Troy's path, according to the report.

Catalan's 2010 Toyota Camry was struck on the driver's side at a right angle, causing the vehicles to rotate and go off the road, Burgan said.

Catalan was pronounced dead at the scene by AtlantiCare medics.

His passenger, 83-year-old Jovita Catalan, was taken to the Trauma Unit at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Atlantic City, and then taken to Cooper due to the significance of her injuries, Burgan said.

Troy had chest pain but refused to go to the hospital.

Officers Kevin Brady and Ofc. Robert Moran, and Sgt. Ed Stearns are investigating.

Traffic was detoured for about four hours the scene was investigated and cleared.
