An Atlantic County jail corrections officer is charged with official misconduct after he allegedly helped smuggle contraband into the Justice Facility.
Christopher Piccioni, 33, of Swedesboro, Gloucester County, faces charges including second-degree official misconduct and conspiracy to commit official misconduct.
The investigation began in January, after the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office received information about contraband being smuggled into the facility in Mays Landing, according to a press release.
The contraband was not detailed in the release, but charges filed against Piccioni's co-defendant at the time indicate possibly cell phones.
Dion Robinson, 39, of Egg Harbor Township, was charged in April with four counts of possession of an electronic communication device by an inmate.
Those offenses are dated Jan. 30, according to court records.
Qydreia Smith, 40, of Mays Landing, is charged in the conspiracy to smuggle the contraband in.
Piccioni, who allegedly helped in exchange for payment, is also accused of tampering during the investigation.
He was hired at the jail Dec. 26, 2022, and resigned April 8. The date of the crime is listed as Oct. 1, meaning he had been employed only about nine months.
It was not clear why Robinson was in the jail at that time. He has since been released.
All three were charged on summonses, meaning they were not held.
This incident is being investigated by the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office Professional Standards and Accountability Unit.
