One injured in Egg Harbor Township crash

A woman was taken to the hospital after her vehicle was trapped under a van in an Egg Harbor Township crash Thursday.

Police were called to the intersection of Mill and Orchard roads at about 4:23 p.m., Capt. Michael Finnerty said.

Emily Whitson, of Cherry Hill, was driving west on Mill Road when she got to the intersection and veered into oncoming traffic, according to the initial investigation.

A Shalom Towers transport van was heading east and tried to swerve to avoid Watson's Toyota Camry, Finnerty said.

The van wound up in the shoulder of the eastbound lane, as the Camry continued west, striking the front driver's side corner of the van, according to the report.

The Toyota became lodged under the transport van, with Whitson becoming trapped, Finnerty said.

Members of the Bargaintown and Cardiff fire companies extricated her. Whitson was treated at the scene, and then taken to the Trauma Unit at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center by Egg Harbor Township EMS and AtlantiCare paramedics, according to the report.

Her injuries were not considered life-threatening.

The Atlantic County Office of Emergency Management assisted in the cleanup of a large gasoline spill from the transport van.

Mill Road in between the intersections of Spruce Avenue and Milroy Road was shut down for about two hours while the crash was being investigated and the scene cleaned up.
