Man allegedly was drunk and speeding in the dark in deadly Galloway boat crash

  • Crime-Courts

A Camden County boater was allegedly drunk and speeding in the dark when he caused a deadly crash in the water off Galloway Township last year.

Jason Santo, 42, of Atco, Waterford Township, was indicted last week for second-degree vehicular homicide.

His blood-alcohol content was at least .13 — more than 1½ times the legal limit — when he crashed his 23-foot Wellcraft boat into the 141 Intracoastal Waterway marker in the Great Bay Inlet just after midnight Aug. 12, 2023, according to the affidavit of probable cause obtained by BreakingAC.

Mark Risden was killed in the crash.

Mark Risden, 44, of Tabernacle, Burlington County, died in the crash. Another passenger — whose name and age were redacted — suffered serious bodily injury.

Santo was speeding in "complete darkness, without lighting," the affidavit states.

An investigation by the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office Fatal Crash Investigation Unit and N.J. State Police led to charges Sept. 25 of this year. Santo was charged on a summons, so he was not jailed.
