Where To Watch Horse Racing Near Atlantic City?

So, you are in Atlantic City, and that horse racing bug couldn’t be put to rest. No worries, we are all horse racing enthusiasts here, and we know what is like when you get that urge to watch a horse race. Maybe we are all addicted to the adrenaline from Sport of Kings.

Atlantic City is a place where you can find anything you want. But you’ve tried your luck at the casinos and maybe had a bite to eat, now you are thinking “How about some good old-fashioned horse racing?”

Well, you can watch it on TV anywhere you like with plenty of streaming options, but that’s not the full experience, right?

So, is there a place where you can catch some horse racing action, without getting too far from the Atlantic City buzz?

Yes, there are a couple of places. Let’s highlight them all.

Atlantic City Race Course – Wait, Isn’t It Closed?

If it’s been a long time since your last visit to Atlantic City, let me tell you, a lot of things changed. First and most importantly, we have the death of the Atlantic City Race Course.

Atlantic City is a place reserved for entertainment, and the biggest entertainment center has been closed.

Have you ever visited the Atlantic City Race Course? It was beautiful! This racecourse was packed with spectators throughout history.

But all good things must come to an end when in 2015 they finally decided to turn off the lights for good.

But this isn’t the only place where you can catch some horse racing action. Yes, you might start thinking about renting a car or looking at some transportation options, since most of our picks are not exactly within a walkable distance.

So, Where Can You Go?

Even though Atlantic City doesn’t have a rock-solid horse racing venue anymore, all hope is not lost. There are still some great options nearby. Such as:

1. Monmouth Park Racetrack

Location: Oceanport, NJ
Distance from AC: About 75 miles (around 1.5-hour drive)

Here we have one of New Jersey’s most popular racetracks or scratch that, this is one of the most popular racetracks in the United States. It features all the elements that a horse racing track needs, such as tradition, history, excitement, drama, good food, and entertainment all year round.

Make sure to check your calendar to see if you are lucky to be there during the Haskell Invitational, which is one of the biggest races held here annually. There are also other popular races, like the Breeders’ Cup held at Monmouth Park in 2007.

The on-site betting action here is exceptional. If you also love horse racing betting, and want to showcase your handicapping skills, check out TwinSpires and their handicapper tournament that includes qualifiers to the Breeders’ Cup Bettin Challenge.

So, why choose Monmouth Park Racetrack? Well, first of all, it is a family-friendly option, with plenty of horse racing action. On top of that, there are plenty of betting opportunities to make your entire journey even more exciting.

Insider Tip: I’d suggest that you visit Monmouth Park season peaks during the summer, so if you're planning a visit, that’s the best time to go. And hey, the beach is nearby if you want to make a weekend of it.

2. Freehold Raceway

Location: Freehold, NJ
Distance from AC: About 70 miles (around 1.5-hour drive)

This is one of the oldest racetracks in the United States, with harness racing that dates back to the 1850s. If you’re into history with your horse racing, Freehold is a great spot.

Why Go?

  • Harness Racing: A different pace from thoroughbred racing, but just as exciting.
  • Seasonal Events: The track runs races from August to May, making it a year-round option for racing fans.
  • Convenient Location: It’s a bit closer to Atlantic City, making it a good choice if you don’t want to drive too far.

Fun Fact: Freehold Raceway was actually the site of the first-ever horse race in the United States. So, if you’re a history buff, that’s something to talk about while you’re there.

3. Parx Racing (Parx Casino and Racing)

Location: Bensalem, PA
Distance from AC: About 60 miles (around 1-hour drive)

Now, if you’re up for a bit of a trip, Parx Racing is a fantastic option. Not only do they have a great racetrack, but you can also enjoy the casino – it’s like Atlantic City’s racing cousin.

Why Go?

  • All-In-One Venue: Combine your love for racing with a bit of casino action.
  • Big Events: Parx hosts the Pennsylvania Derby, one of the richest races in the state.
  • Year-Round Racing: With a packed calendar, you’ll likely find a race whenever you visit.

Pro Tip: If you’re a fan of big races, mark your calendar for the Pennsylvania Derby in September. It’s a big deal and draws a crowd.

What About Off-Track Betting?

Not feeling like driving out of town? No worries, Atlantic City has you covered with off-track betting options.

1. Bally’s Wild Wild West Casino

Bally’s offers a dedicated area for horse racing enthusiasts where you can place bets and watch live races from tracks across the country. It’s like being at the racetrack without leaving the casino floor.

2. Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa

The Borgata has a Race & Sports Book where you can place bets on horse racing, as well as other sports. It’s a swanky spot, perfect if you want to combine a bit of luxury with your racing experience.

What’s The Best Option For You?

If you’re all about the live experience and don’t mind a short drive, Monmouth Park or Parx Racing is where you should be headed. They offer the full package – live races, betting, and a lively atmosphere.

But if you’re in Atlantic City for the weekend and want to stay close to the boardwalk, the OTB spots at Bally’s or Borgata are solid choices. You can still catch all the action and maybe even hit the slots afterward.
