An Atlantic City man pleaded guilty to gun possession shortly after his trial started this week.
Assistant Prosecutor Elizabeth Fischer had just given her opening statement to the jury but no evidence had been presented when Christopher Jones entered his plea, according to the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office.
Jones, 43, pleaded guilty to second-degree possession of a handgun. The plea is open, meaning Superior Court Judge Pamela D'Arcy will be able to sentence him at her discretion, with a maximum of 10 years in prison due to the second-degree charge.
The maximum carries a five-year period of parole ineligibility.
Pleasantville police were called to the Pleasant Acres Apartment Complex on April 3, 2022, for reports of a man with a gun in a black Chevrolet Impala with tinted windows.
Jones was the passenger in a car that was stopped matching that description. He a found with a loaded revolver in a crossbody bag he was wearing.
He is not able to legally own a firearm due to his prior convictions.
Jones is scheduled to be sentenced March 12.
