The Final Woj Bomb: Adrian Wojnarowski Retires From ESPN

  • Sixers

Adrian Wojnarowski has tapped out of the NBA news-breaking game.

The premier NBA information source announced Wednesday that he's retiring from ESPN, and the journalism industry as a whole.

In a subsequent story on ESPN with Pete Thamel, Jeff Passan and Adam Schefter all given bylines, it was revealed that Wojnarowski will become the general manager of the men's basketball program at St. Bonaventure. Wojnarowski graduated from St. Bonnie's in 1991.

On one hand, this story is surprising since Wojnarowski certainly will be taking a massive paycut in his new role, and it's difficult to leave something while you're on top.

On the other hand, Wojnarowski is 55 years old. Being in the newsbreaking game and constantly glued to your phone probably isn't healthy at any age. But it gets less and less healthy as you age. And in general, it ruins your life outside of your work. You can never be fully present in anything other than getting the next scoop. At a certain point, that has to get tired, even if you're paid handsomely to do it.

Wojnarowski joined ESPN in 2017 after a decade working at Yahoo! Sports as their NBA insider. His "Woj Bombs" made him a household name not only in the industry, but in popular culture. He'll go down as one of the most successful news breakers in the history of any sport, and now perhaps get to have something of a life again.
