The 2025 Grand National: What's in store and who to watch

The Grand National is arguably the highlight of the British racing calendar, drawing in millions of viewers and punters around the world to eagerly witness the thrills and spills of Aintree’s world-famous course.

Looking ahead to the 2025 edition, there’s no doubt that we’re in for another great spectacle. Excitement is already building around the potential runners, the course conditions, and the big stories that could define this year’s race.

So, whether you’re looking to enjoy some Grand National betting, or simply learn more about what to expect ahead of the race, read on.

What to expect in the 2025 Grand National

The 2025 Grand National is scheduled for Saturday, 5 April, at Aintree Racecourse, and it promises to be another unforgettable event. With four miles and two-and-a-half furlongs of action in store, along with 30 testing fences and a maximum field of 34 runners, the race remains the ultimate test of stamina, skill, and bravery for horses and jockeys alike.

One of the biggest talking points surrounding this year’s renewal is the going. If Aintree experiences a dry spell in the lead-up to the race, we could see some good to soft ground, ultimately favouring speedier horses. However, if conditions turn wet, the race may very well become a gruelling endurance battle suited to stayers with proven form on heavy ground.

Key contenders for the 2025 Grand National

While the final declarations won’t be confirmed until 48 hours before the race, several names are already generating significant interest. Here are the top contenders that could be ones to watch on race day, pending final declarations:

I Am Maximus

Last year's winner, I Am Maximus, aims to defend his title in this year’s edition. Trained by Willie Mullins, he showcased an impressive performance in the 2024 Grand National when he defeated Delta Work by a comfortable seven-and-a-half lengths. Mullins is optimistic about his chances, and fans are confident that this year could prove another success if other horses don’t step up to the challenge

Inothewayurthinkin

Currently, the bookies' favourite, Inothewayurthinkin is a strong contender for the upcoming race. The seven-year-old impressed at Aintree’s 2024 festival, winning the Mildmay Novices' Chase from Iroko, and has also shown consistent form this season, finishing fourth to Galopin Des Champs at Leopardstown recently.

Iroko

The JP McManus-owned Iroko has emerged as a strong contender, with recent performances boosting his odds – including a second place at Haydock Park in November 2024 and a fourth on Cheltenham’s Festival Trials Day in January 2025.

Intense Raffles

Intense Raffles, owned by Simon Munir and Isaac Souede, has shown promise in recent races. Coming second to Nick Rockett in the Bobbyjo Chase at Fairyhouse in February, his performance could provide insights into his Grand National prospects.

The 2025 Grand National will likely be another gripping renewal of the world’s greatest steeplechase. With a strong mix of past winners, emerging talent, and legendary trainers vying for glory, this year’s race is shaping up to be a classic.

Whether you’re a seasoned punter looking at racing odds or a casual viewer hoping for some memorable horse racing skill, all eyes will be on Aintree come 5 April to see who will etch their name into racing history.
